Masyarakat terbentuk dari individu-individu. Individu-individu yang terdiri dari berbaga latar belakang tentu akan membentuk suatu masyarakat heterogen yang terdiri dari kelompok sosial. Dengan adanya atau terjadinya kelompok sosial ini maka terbentuklah suatu pelapisan masyarakat atau terbentuklah masyarakat yang bersastra.

Masyarakat merupakan suatu kesatuan yang didasari ikatan-ikatan yang sudah teratur dan boleh dikatakan stabil. Sehubungan dengan ini, maka dengan sendirinya masyarakat merupakan kesatuan yang dalam pembentukannya mempunyai gejala yang sama.
